A safe hiring checklist for families
Hiring directly puts you in control of who joins your home. It also means the checks are yours to make, so here is the short list we give every family.
Meet her in person before you commit
A video call is a good first filter, but see her at your home and let her spend time with your children before anything is agreed.
Call the previous employer yourself
Ask for a phone number, not just a letter. Five minutes on the phone tells you more about reliability than any reference letter will.
Ask to see original documents
Look at the original passport, Emirates ID and certificates. Photocopies and phone photos are easy to alter.
Confirm the visa position early
Find out if her visa can be transferred, or if you need a new one. A typing centre or Tadbeer centre can check this before you make an offer.
Complete the medical test
The domestic worker medical fitness test is part of the visa process. Nobody should start work before it is finished.
Put the terms in writing
Working hours, weekly day off, annual leave, air ticket and accommodation all go into a signed contract, so nothing is left to memory later.
Be careful with money upfront
Be cautious if anyone asks for a large payment before an interview, or before you have seen original documents.
Trust what you notice
If something feels off during the interview, keep looking. Getting the right person matters far more than filling the role quickly.
